This drawing was by the Dutch artist William Schellincks (1632-1678) in 1662, three years before the Great Plague. The shed has been built over the well. Various peoples are lounging about the shed, imbibing the waters and then leaving for the woods surrounding the common. In the distance it appears some horse-racing is taking place; this practice eventually developed into the popular Epsom Downs in the 1800s.
