By the early 1700s Epsom had developed and innkeepers were abundant. Timber-framed cottages were being replaced by brick shops. In the summer young fellows would come down from London ostensibly to "drink the waters" but were really there for the "entertainment" -- betting on horse races, or gambling, played bowls outside, or took advantage of the music inside while drinking German wine or local beer.
