This newspaper clipping, dating from 1909, is of the orphanage, the original Gadolin's laboratory on Luostarinkatu. Note the orphans posing to the left of the adult headmaster. Translation (from Swedish): "The laboratory building of Gadolin at Vårdberget. Photograph from the year 1909. Now an attic floor has been added. Picture collections of Åbo Akademi."
"Vårdberget" was the hill on which the Gadolin home, laboratory, and plantation were located. "Vårdberget" means "Fire Signal Hill" in old Swedish. "Vårdberget" is mentioned frequently in following photograph captions. Photograph, courtesy Pekka Pyykkö.
