Since the culture of the church was responsible for the University, and since knowledge threatened the faith of the church, the role of the University became to establish the Biblical Truth by using Aristotelian logic and knowledge. A common teaching technique of the University was by means of disputations among the teachers, students, and visitors. A question was stated and argued by Biblical quotations and Aristotelian certitudes, and the negative was given and defended in kind. This back-and-forth discussion formed debates, sharpened the mind, and expanded the mental arena that could be explored. From this culture came the Medieval scientists, then the evolution of alchemy into chemistry, and finally the recognition that the true elements were not the Aristotelian earth, fire, water, but the Lavoisian 31 elements of iron, oxygen, calcium, arsenic, etc.
