Montpellier, France/montpellier039Previous | Home | NextCloseup of the left-hand side of the table montage. On the upper shelf is the quotation "Never forget that I was a student in pharmacy," quoted by Balard to Dumas in 1874 at the School of Pharmacie (then on rue de l'Arbalète in Paris). Immediately below this quotation is the history of Balard at Paris (partially hidden by the apparatus). The glass cylinder in the middle of the bench contains "Eaux mère de marias salants" -- "concentrated solution [mother liquors] from the saltworks." The concentrated salt was placed in the retort to the left, the bromine was collected in the receiver to the right. |
