Southwest of Montpellier by 30 km is Sète, the area of the salt marshes where Balard gathered his material for his bromine discoveries. This is one of the salt marshes 5 km northeast of Sète; in Balard's day it must have looked much like this. The site where Balard did his studies was known as "Salin du Bañas," a curious blend of French and Spanish. Today the exact location is not known, but this must be in the general area.
