Today the active saltworks are at Aigues-Mortes, 25 km to the east of Montpellier. Salt was harvested in the same way as in Balard's time, with water dammed in the spring, evaporated in the summer, and collected in the fall. Aigues-Mortes is Occitan for "Dead Waters."
