Approaching the Palais Universitaire. This is the main building of the former Imperial University of Strasbourg. Sturm founded the Strasbourg Gymnasium in 1538, which was converted to a university in 1631. The university was annexed by King Louis XIV in 1681, but remained German in culture until the French Revolution of the 1790s. After the Franco-Prussian War the University was renamed Kaiser-Wilhelm University in 1872; after World War I the university adopted its present name.
