This is a drawing of the old mine, which stretched down 400 meters. The complex marked "10" includes the Kuhschacht Huthaus (same appearance as today), and to its left the conical building known as a Pferdegöpel (horse-powered winch) {LINK: to Pferdegöpel in Johanngeogenstadt}. The Pferdegöpel was at the site of the present monument. The shaft marked "9" is "Kunstschacht," another entrance to the mine complex; Kunstschacht is at the present corner of Bahnhofstraße and Buchstraße (no traces of previous mining activity; today clustered with shops) -- 120 meters south of the present Huthaus. In German parlance a vertical shaft was called "Schacht" and a horizontal gallery was called a "Stollen." A visitor to Germany will find these terms frequently in historic mines that are open to the public.
