Engels was the social scientist and philosopher who coauthored (with Karl Marx) The Communist Manifesto; Engels praised Agricola for "belonging to the total of Germany!" for his contributions to "mineralogy, geology, medicine, humanism, pedagology, philology, history, paleontology, politics, economics, philosophy, theology, and writing." Herbert Hoover, formerly a mining engineer and later President of the United States, is to be especially acknowledged for performing (with his wife) a detailed translation of De Re Metallica, with extensive footnotes, from the original Latin into English. This translation has given detailed insight into the methods and thinking of the 16th century mining, mineralogy, and geology. Hoover praised Agricola for helping to "lay the foundations of science."
