The Rathaus (City Hall) in the center of Wernigerode. This building dates from 1277 and was originally the "Spielhaus" ("Playhouse") where festivals, fairs, shows, and weddings took place. In the mid-1500s the City Council began to hold its meetings there. The late gothic architecture, as well as the half-timbered houses (Fachwerkbauen), are a cherished cultural heritage of Wernigerode, and this style of architecture is preserved throughout the old town.
