Above the book is a portrait of Jan Sniadecki (1756-1830), the brother of Jedrzej Sniadecki. Jan was a Polish mathematician, philosopher, and astronomer. And was rector of the university 1807-1830. One of Jan’s interests was the study of recently discovered asteroids – which is where Jedrzej got his idea of naming his new element “vestium.”
