Father Hubert Dephoff was director of the Catholic Mission, which served the local Otomí Indians. Father Dephoff, a native of Germany, had devoted his entire life to this mission. He gave much important information on the local history including the mining area. He knew exactly where the Purísia del Cardonal Mine was -- as he pointed eastward, he identified the mine directly across the road, plainly within view of the Mission (see next photo).
It was interesting that direct conversations between Father Dephoff and the authors were carried out in German, between the Father and Oscar in Spanish, and between Oscar and the authors in English -- a true international communication forum.
