An old Swedish book describes the process centuries ago: a gang of women broke the rocks with hammers, the resulting gravel was roasted on charcoal fires to release sulfur dioxide, and then the roasted ore was heated intensely with charcoal (the smelting process, sometimes repeated several times) to consummate the reduction process and produce elemental copper. The whole process took perhaps two months.
