Alchemy -- a precursor to modern chemistry -- was originally an oriental secret, first brought to Europe in the Middle Ages. Many of the methods used in modern chemistry were adopted from alchemical techniques. The method of purification was of prime interest to the alchemists. This concept captivated Paracelsus -- who believed that effective medicines should be pure essences.
