This is the Old Radiation Laboratory, a wooden building where the first transuranium element (neptunium) was synthesized, and where advanced cyclotrons (a 27-inch, then converted to a 37-inch) were built by Lawrence. Bombardment of molybdenum with deuterons led to the production of the first synthetic element -- technetium -- which was discovered by Segrè in Palermo, Italy, in 1937, and to whom the irradiated molybdenum had been sent {LINK: Palermo350}
The Old Radiation Laboratory was put into operation in 1931, refurbished from the Civil Engineering Testing Laboratory, built in 1885. The building was demolished in 1959 and replaced by Latimer Hall. The view is west (note the top of the Campanile appearing above; we will visit the campus later to visit these sites). The view is west.
