Berkeley, California/berkeley053Previous | Home | NextLawrence next built a 60-inch cyclotron in 1939, which was placed in Crocker Hall, next to the Radiation Laboratory. With this cyclotron irradiation of bismuth with alpha particles produced the new element astatine, which was identified in LeConte Hall (see below). In another experiment, uranium bombarded with neutrons produced the first transuranium element, neptunium (see next photo). Along with the Old Radiation Laboratory, Crocker Hall was demolished to make room for Latimer Hall. The view is east. |
