π-Extended porphyrins (porphyrins fused with aromatic rings) are of broad interest due to their unique combination of photophysical, optoelectronic, and physicochemical properties, and their potential applications in many areas ranging from biomedicine to organic electronics. Although known for decades, π-extended porphyrins remain largely unexplored due to limited synthetic approaches to access these compounds. In particular, the lack of functionalization methods limits their applications in many areas. To fully investigate this attractive field, the Wang research group has engaged in developing new methods for the synthesis and functionalization of π-extended porphyrins.
