Sabará is hilly, with frequent arduous walks as one scales the slopes. A major theme in the village is the blue house (casa azul). Sabará was the first settlement in Minas Gerais; mining dates from 1674. Gold was found in the rivers in the area, and Sabará rapidly grew to become the largest town in Minas Gerais.
