This was an original Voltaic pile (rudimentary battery) given from Volta to Faraday. In 1813 Faraday became assisant to Davy. Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, and he popularized the terms "electrode," "anode," and "cathode." Coming from an humble family background, he was self-educated and through his brilliant and dedicated work became Professor at the Royal Institution in 1833.
